The boundaries which divide Life from Death are at best shadowy and vague. Who shall say where the one ends, and where the other begins? — Edgar Allan Poe
TIFFIN, OH. — Do you believe in ghosts? Have you wondered if those who have gone before sometimes desire to communicate with us? If you’ve ever been curious about the entities that lurk in Tiffin’s most historic district after dark, join award-winning author/historian Lisa Swickard for a Haunted Tiffin Ghost Walk.
The after-dark tours — scheduled on Friday nights from July through Halloween night, weather permitting —will take participants on an eerie visit to the sites of the historic War of 1812 fort, Camp Ball, that once sat on Frost Parkway just north of the Washington Street bridge. The ghost walk will continue down Frost Parkway and stop near the area where William and Addline Axline met their demise during the 1913 Flood. Additional sites are being researched and will be added to the downtown tour.
Reservations are required as each Haunted Tiffin Ghost Walk is limited to 15-20 participants. The ghost walks also are available on other nights by appointment.
“This is an actual ghost hunt,” Swickard explained. “I don’t claim to be able to conjure spirits, but there have been some really odd things happen to us in the Frost Parkway area during the research phase of the tour.
“For example, I’d forgotten that the Indian Maiden statue was moved during the renovation of Frost Parkway. It initially stood atop the original spring,” Swickard continued. “When my ghost-hunting friend, Joan Estep, and I approached the statue, her mel meter (that measures electromagnetic fields and temperature changes) went crazy. And when I asked how the entity liked the statue, Joan’s ovilus (electronic spirit voice box) produced the words ‘HASTE,’ ‘MARKER’ and ‘STORY.’ Make of it what you will, but it was a freakish experience, and that was just one of many.”
The Haunted Tiffin Ghost Walks will begin at 9 p.m. and last until at least 11 p.m. However, Swickard said if it is a particularly good night for paranormal activity, the tour could be extended until midnight. Dowsing rods (used to detect hidden energy fields, including spirit energy) will be provided for ghost walk participants, and a few EMF (electromagnetic field) readers also will be available.
“I’d also encourage participants to bring cameras in an attempt to capture orbs in the area,” Swickard said, explaining that orbs in photos are thought to be manifestations of spirits in the form of energy balls. “Hand-held tape recorders are also helpful as sometimes they pick up voices and sounds you can’t hear when you’re out in the field.”
Cost of the Haunted Tiffin Ghost Walk is $15. Because of the nature of the experience and the “quiet time” required, no one under the age of 13 will be admitted.
Swickard does not guarantee participants will encounter spirits.
“However, so far we’ve had entire conversations on the ovilus with something,” she said. “At the very least, it will be a fantastic step back into history.”
